In a world rapidly consuming artificial intelligence, the term “art” has been skewed and violated. Art is the purest form of HUMAN expression — whether its painting, photography, writing, etc. These mediums have been used by people to express emotion, creativity, pain, loss, suffering, joy, love, and fear for centuries.
In this piece, I decided to depict war.
The 'after' image represents the violence AI is waging on art and artists. I removed the tree from the initial photo using AI (the only use in this process) to represent that this technology is hurting and trying to replace the natural world (environment and humanity alike). Instead, a machine is placed, one built to replicate historical human expression. The replication this machine made is depicted here as well, but instead it has a mechanical ‘glitch’ applied to it, representing its falsified and tampered nature. A mechanical arm is reaching out from a computer-bit void breaking through the side of the building, aiming for the painting in the center.
“The Creation of Adam” lies in the center, overlapping the original mural that was corrupted by the AI removal of the tree. This painting by Michelangelo encapsulates the moment humanity was given consciousness, which is something that has been abused with the invention of AI. Mankind is taking our most prominent trait and giving it to something never intended to be capable of containing this gift. The robotic arm in the building is sucking the color and life from this iconic painting to fuel its ability to replicate it.
On the right side of the photo is a tree woman. She is sitting upon a cut down tree, another natural aspect destroyed by AI. She has her head down — disappointed and unwilling to watch the chaos happening in front of her eyes. The destruction of her livelihood. I took a sculpture and added a wood texture as well as a tree on top of her head. From this tree, a mossy hand is reaching out, trying to restore the color and life to the painting.
One side is bright and full of life, the other grey and being sapped of the beauty of art. Humanity created art as an outlet. AI replicates art as a fraudulent abuse of power.
